SLC Weekend Guide: Edition 1

With so much happening in Salt Lake City this summer it is hard to get a handle on what events are going on and which ones you should go to. I am continually surprised that every weekend I find myself turning down awesome opportunities because there is something going on in my neighborhood that is just as much fun. And this is not because I am on any VIP lists … please … I’ve only lived here for 8 months. No one is banging down my door to make sure I am accounted for.  It really wasn’t until a couple of weekends ago that Barton and I where driving down from a jammed pack day in Park City that I said to him, “damn, we just killed that weekend.” Now I have a serious FOMO (fear of missing out) and a short attention span. I also listen to and absorb local news like crazy. So when it comes time to plan a weekend I research a huge variety of things going on in SLC. Notice I said plan a weekend- yes I also do that.

When I concoct a tentative weekend plan I base it off of a very scientific equation.

Free + Food + Drinks + Adventure + Music = Killing a weekend

So in this space on the blog I thought it would be a great idea to provide my weekend plans for others. Not in a creepy “I hope you’ll join me” type of way, but more of a, here is a list of activities that I genuinely think will be really fun to do this weekend. Because what it the point of checking instagram and seeing that you missed out on a free concert. (Disclaimer – it is also more than 100% okay to just view the instagrams whilst watching Netflix and nursing a hangover).

So without further ado here are a few things happening in Salt Lake City the weekend of July 10th!

 Friday – July 10th

4pm – 8pm / Sugar House Farmers Market / Sugarmount Plaza – On Friday afternoon the Sugar House Farmers Market opens for the first time this summer.  There will be live music and apparently kid activities.

6pm – 11pm / Granary Row / 336 West 700 South – Friday evening if you haven’t already checked out Granary Row you most definitely should. The street has been shut down all summer long so that it could be home to a summer beer garden, stage, and shops made out of shipping containers. Ride your bike down if you don’t want to worry about parking.

9pm-ish / Sundance Film / City Park, Park City – One more option Friday night would be to go up to Park City to catch a FREE sundance film projected outside. Screening starts at dusk.

Saturday- July 11th

8am / Bubble Run 5k / Utah State Fair Grounds – If you are not feeling hungover you could participate in the Bubble Run 5k. Which you would have to sign up for Friday so that you could pick up your packet and enjoy a sudsy run through tons of bubbles.

8am / Dirty Bird Mud Run / Snowbasin – For those who want a more adventurous sort of race, Snowbasin has the inaugural Dirty Bird Mud Run today too. Grab a ticket on Friday if you want to get it cheaper than the $100, day-of, price. They expect the race to take around 2 hours and you cover over 5 miles, plus a massive slip-and-slide at the end.

8am – 2pm / Downtown Farmer’s Market / Pioneer Park – For those of you who missed the Sugar House Farmers Market, there is also the Downtown Farmers Market. There is an amazing collection of food and gift vendors to explore. It is important to take particular note of the food carts down the middle of the park.

12pm – 10pm / Givestock / Gallivant Center – And for the main event the greatest folks over at Even Stevens are hosting what they are calling Givestock, a community music and art fair, benefiting their non-profit partners. Headlined by the Cold War Kids, they are also featuring many awesome local bands and artists. Tickets are $10 if you buy them from any of the Even Stevens locations and $15 at the door. Like I need another excuse to eat lunch at Even Stevens.

Sunday – July 12th

Whenever you wake up / East Canyon Reservoir /5535 S Hwy 66 – So if I have learned anything about Utah its that you get all your errands run on Saturday and leave Sunday for the outdoors. Here is a glimpse of East Canyon Reservoir which is about a 45 minute drive from SLC and perfect if you are craving a beach like atmosphere.

12pm – 5pm / Blues, Brews, and BBQ / Snowbasin – If you missed Blitzen Trapper at The State Room on Saturday, no fear they play again for FREE at Snow Basin Sunday afternoon. Snow Basin is holding Blues, Brews & Bbq’s all summer long for free up at the resort on Sundays with Blitzen Trapper Headlining.

Now that you are (a little more) in the know, go out and enjoy a fantastic weekend in SLC!
